which we have confirmed are REALLY delivering services to folks in
need. Products typically needed include: Bottled water, Baby food
and formula, baby wipes, diapers Toilet paper, sanitary wipes,

"If you want to help, here's what we need in Covington right now:

Cleaning Supplies (glass cleaner, bleach, disinfectant, etc.)
Aspirin and other basic over the counter drugs.
Bottled Water
Canned Goods
Hygiene Supplies
Baby Supplies - Baby Food Formula, diapers #4, #5, Wipes, Pedialyte
Sterile Gloves
Batteries - All kinds, from AA to watch and hearing aid batteries.
Volunteers with trucks and cars
Self contained kitchens with generators, utensils, workers

Consider sending supplies in reusable containers. List the contents on
the outside of the package so the folks in the warehouse can easily
sort the items.

WAYS TO OFFER HOUSING

...posted the NCDD Listserv

MoveOn.org has developed an online tool for folks in the
Southeast to offer emergency housing to hurricane victims who
need a bed and a roof.

You can post your offer of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a
decent couch) and search for available housing online at:www. moveon.org

Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance
about 300 miles of New Orleans. But no matter where you live, your housing could still make a world of difference to a person or family in need, so please offer what you can.

The following resources for providing financial assistance to Katrina victims have been compiled from the NCDD listserv:

CNN has a fairly comprehensive unevaluated, unannotated list of
places to give or get help

Charity Navigator, the nation's largest charity rating service, has
assembled a list of highly rated mainstream charities working to help
the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Gilbert Brenson-Lazan , President of Global Facilitator Service Corps , says "Give a donation to a reputable aid organization. The Salvation Army and World Vision have the best record of use of funds." (Neither of these are listed by Charity Navigator.)

Sarah van Gelder, editor of YES! magazine writes:
I did a bit of research (with Fran Korten's help) and we came up with
some other options for helping, including some locally rooted
organizations with great track records of building community and
helping marginalized people. My blog has the information and links,

Founded by Quakers in 1917 to provide conscientious objectors with an opportunity to aid civilian war victims, the AFSC won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947 for its work with World War II refugees.

NAACP Disaster Relief Efforts - The NAACP, America's oldest civil
rights organization (founded in 1909) is setting up command centers
in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as part of its disaster relief
efforts. NAACP units across the nation have begun collecting
resources that will be placed on trucks and sent directly into the
disaster areas. Also, the NAACP has established a disaster relief
fund to accept monetary donations to aid in the relief effort.
Donations can be made online or checks can be sent

Americans for the Arts Launches New Emergency Relief Fund

September 15, 2005 Americans for the Arts, the nations leading arts advocacy organization, announced today that it has established the Americans for the Arts Emergency Relief Fund, a permanent fund developed to provide timely financial assistance to areas impacted by a major disaster for the purpose of helping them rebuild the arts in their communities. Created with an initial contribution of $100,000 from Americans for the Arts’ own reserves, the relief fund will distribute support directly to local arts agencies to assist with their own recovery or to provide needed services and funding to local nonprofit arts groups and individual artists and to other relief efforts dedicated to helping the arts. One-hundred percent of the contributions to the Emergency Relief Fund will go directly to these efforts.

There is a wonderful Katrina calendar with drawings by evacuee kids for sale for $10.00 each. You can order them from the wonderful woman, Helen Hudson, who created and produced them in Virginia. See below for address and shipping costs. The donation will go directly to benefit Turning Point Partners which is beginning to do work in trauma healing.

Here's the story of how they came to be:
Turning Point Partners (TPP) is a group that is led by Jean Handley and Lou Furman. The two of them have been doing restorative justice work with youth in courts, schools and correctional facilities for five years.

When Katrina hit, Jean's home was filled with water to the ceiling. She evacuated to Memphis to live with her sister and began to reach out. Jean has had a longtime association with Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She began to dialogue with them about adapting their STAR program- Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Recovery (started to respond to 9-11) to this natural disaster. Ten of us went to Virginia a few weeks ago to work on this project. STAR, through Jean's influence, is shifting to include more experiential and artistic modalities in the presentation of trauma healing.

Helen, one of the associates at EMU-STAR (a clinical social worker and artist), wanted to do some direct help and offered to produce a calendar that would benefit TPP's efforts. We put out a call, got some wonderful drawings from evacuee kids in Atlanta and Dallas. She found a printer who donated his work - and now there are 500 copies of a beautiful Katrina Kids calendar available. Again, all donations will go directly to support TPP. Folks in Atlanta, Dallas, Birmingham, Lafayette and here in New Orleans are beginning to offer "Circles of Hope." TPP will soon offer training for trainers and community leaders in trauma recovery. In the 3rd week of January, a workshop in theater and trauma healing will also be offered.
