25 Years of Dialogue: How Out of Hand Turns Storytelling Into Civic Conversation

​Out of Hand, the Atlanta-based social impact arts organization, is marking 25 years of using theater to drive dialogue and social change with its 2026–2027 anniversary season. Since 2001, the organization has paired original productions with facilitated dialogue and community partnerships to engage people across differences on issues from racial equity and public health to housing, democracy, and belonging. The anniversary season centers this dialogue work through its Equitable Dinners model, its living-room "Shows in Homes," and its We Hold These Truths series of short plays on American democracy and identity, each designed to turn performance into structured community conversation. Several of the season's offerings show how that model works in practice. Through Shows in Homes, one-act plays on community issues are staged in living rooms across Metro Atlanta, transforming private spaces into venues where neighbors can talk openly about the issues affecting them. The organization's award-winning Equitable Dinners model pairs a short performance with a facilitated, equity-centered dialogue over a shared meal, in person or virtually, giving participants a structured container for courageous conversation. Returning this season, the We Hold These Truths series presents four short plays that spark discussion about American democracy, identity, and the country's future, each written from a different vantage point, including Latino, Native American, rural White, and Black Southern perspectives. Out of Hand also extends this approach into workplaces and organizations, offering customized facilitated experiences that help teams build trust and navigate complex conversations through storytelling, shared meals, and structured dialogue.
