Building Bridges Through Sustained Dialogue: Training Opportunities for Community Facilitators12/1/2025 The Sustained Dialogue Institute’s January 7–9, 2025, three-session training series offers community members a comprehensive introduction to Sustained Dialogue, a relationship-centered peacebuilding process designed to help groups move through conflict toward collaborative action. Rooted in a five-stage methodology developed by Dr. Harold Saunders, the training equips facilitators with skills in deep listening, emotional regulation, equitable facilitation, and crafting questions that foster understanding across differences. Accessible to participants of varied backgrounds and experience levels, the workshop models inclusive learning practices while preparing graduates to co-facilitate dialogue groups and join a supportive practitioner network. Ultimately, the series strengthens local democratic capacity by helping communities build the relationships needed to address complex issues constructively. In communities across the country, deep divisions continue to challenge our collective capacity to address complex problems. The Sustained Dialogue Institute recognizes that bridging these divides requires more than good intentions—it demands skilled facilitation, intentional relationship-building, and a commitment to creating spaces where productive conversation can flourish across difference. From January 7-9, 2025, the Sustained Dialogue Institute is offering a comprehensive three-session training series designed to equip community facilitators with the tools and frameworks needed to lead transformative conversations. This intensive workshop introduces participants to Sustained Dialogue, a proven five-stage peace process originally developed during the Camp David Peace Accords and refined over decades of practice in diverse settings. A Process Rooted in PeacebuildingThe Sustained Dialogue methodology stands apart from traditional facilitation approaches. Rather than focusing on negotiation or debate, this circle process creates systematic opportunities for individuals from conflicting groups to examine the dynamics of their relationships, identify obstacles to change, and collaboratively design pathways forward. The approach centers on building genuine relationships as the foundation for meaningful action—a principle that aligns closely with NCDD's commitment to authentic community engagement. What makes this process particularly accessible is its design for implementation by everyday people. Former diplomat Dr. Harold Saunders intentionally created Sustained Dialogue to be led by community members themselves, not just professional mediators or trained experts. Currently active on 60 campuses, in at least 12 communities, and in various workplace settings, the methodology has proven effective in addressing conflicts around race, ethnicity, power, belief, resource allocation, and persistent misperceptions. Comprehensive Training for Community LeadersThe three-session series offers a complete introduction to both participating in and facilitating Sustained Dialogue. Each three-hour session builds progressively, moving from foundational concepts to practical application strategies. Participants will explore the relational dynamics that turn disparate groups into effective coalitions, develop skills for crafting questions that deepen understanding, and learn equitable facilitation techniques that honor diverse participation styles. The training emphasizes several key competencies essential for effective dialogue facilitation: deep listening that prioritizes understanding over persuasion, emotional regulation in the face of conflict, collaborative partnership with co-facilitators, and openness to participant feedback. These skills reflect the core values of humility, authenticity, and shared power that characterize genuinely democratic community processes. Participants who complete all three sessions will be prepared to co-facilitate dialogue groups using Sustained Dialogue Institute materials and will gain access to a supportive network of practitioners. The Institute provides ongoing coaching and connection opportunities, recognizing that facilitators need continued support as they navigate the complexities of community dialogue work. Strengthening Democratic Practice At its heart, this training opportunity represents an investment in democratic infrastructure. Communities facing entrenched conflicts need facilitators who can create conditions for genuine conversation—spaces where people can move beyond polarized positions to discover shared interests and collaborative possibilities. The Sustained Dialogue process provides a structured pathway for this work, balancing the need for clear methodology with the flexibility required to honor each community's unique context.
For NCDD network members and others committed to dialogue and deliberation, this training offers both practical skills and a connection to a wider community of practice. The approach complements other facilitation methodologies while offering distinctive frameworks for relationship-building and sustained engagement across differences.
