The National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation (NCDD) was founded not from formal planning but from a shared recognition of the need for collaboration among practitioners, scholars, and community leaders committed to bridging divides and addressing complex challenges. Emerging from the first National Conference on Dialogue & Deliberation in 2002, NCDD has grown from a single gathering into a global community of practice, connecting hundreds of members and tens of thousands of participants across more than 20 countries. Over two decades, NCDD has become a hub for resources, learning, and innovation in public engagement, developing key frameworks and fostering collaboration across diverse fields. Rooted in values of inclusivity, cooperation, and continuous learning, NCDD models the very principles it promotes—showing that dialogue across differences is both possible and powerful. Its history is defined not only by its accomplishments but by the relationships and collective impact that continue to sustain and inspire its mission today. As we continue to grow and evolve as a community, it's worth taking a moment to reflect on the journey that brought us here—and the vision that continues to guide our work. The National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation didn't emerge from a boardroom or a strategic plan. It was born from a genuine need, recognized by practitioners, scholars, activists, and community leaders who came together at the first National Conference on Dialogue & Deliberation near Washington, DC in October 2002. These pioneers understood something essential: that bringing people together across differences to tackle complex challenges requires both art and infrastructure. They saw practitioners working in isolation across various disciplines—public policy, social work, communication, education, social justice, and organizational development—and recognized the power of creating a shared space for learning and collaboration. From Gathering to Growing CommunityWhat began as a conference has evolved into a thriving community of practice, comprising 700 member organizations and individuals, with a reach that extends to 28,000 newsletter subscribers and connections spanning 20 countries. This growth reflects not just numbers, but the expanding recognition that dialogue and deliberation are essential skills for navigating an increasingly complex world. Throughout our history, NCDD has remained committed to being more than just a membership organization. We've built a clearinghouse of thousands of resources, maintained one of the longest-running blogs in our field, developed foundational tools like the Core Principles for Public Engagement and the Engagement Streams Framework, and created spaces—both physical and virtual—where our community can connect, learn, and collaborate. Living Our Values Through PracticeThe values that shaped NCDD's founding continue to animate our work today. Collaboration isn't just something we advocate for—it's woven into how we govern ourselves and design our programs. Inclusivity drives us to constantly examine whether our organization, resources, and community reflect our shared equal humanity. And our commitment to continuous learning ensures that we remain responsive to new methods, scholarship, and the evolving needs of those doing this vital work.
Perhaps most importantly, NCDD has always understood that we're not separate from the change we seek to create. We model the very practices our members champion in the world, demonstrating what becomes possible when we honor diverse voices, experiences, and perspectives. In a time when division often seems inevitable, we stand as living proof that coming together across differences isn't just idealistic—it's practical, powerful, and essential. As we look back on over two decades of coalition-building, resource-sharing, and community-strengthening, we're reminded that our history isn't just about what we've accomplished. It's about the relationships we've nurtured, the knowledge we've shared, and the collective impact we've generated by supporting one another in this transformative work.
