This summer, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg became more than a landmark—it transformed into a vibrant space for courageous conversation and collective reflection. From June 15–17, 2025, the Arthur V. Mauro Institute for Peace and Justice at St. Paul’s College, together with the Canadian Interfaith Conversation, co-hosted the 2025 Our Whole Society Conference. With its timely theme, Fostering Hope in a Divided World, the gathering brought together scholars, faith leaders, activists, and community builders in search of meaningful ways to address the urgent challenges facing our communities and our democracy. At the heart of this effort is the Mauro Institute’s unwavering commitment to creating spaces where people can share stories, listen deeply, and find common ground—even when the issues are difficult and the divides feel deep. These values resonate strongly with the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation’s mission to strengthen democracy through thoughtful dialogue, inclusive deliberation, and community-driven problem solving. Creating Spaces for Storytelling and Civic ReflectionIn keeping with its namesake’s vision for Winnipeg as a cultural center of hope, the Mauro Institute brought its unique approach to life by sponsoring two powerful events during the conference. With generous support from the Blankstein Family Abrahamic Faiths Storytelling Dialogue: Equality and Leadership Fund, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra opened the conference by weaving a musical narrative of hope. The performance reminded attendees that, in times of division, art can cut through the noise, clear away what burdens the soul, and open hearts to each other’s stories. Equally impactful was a panel discussion funded by the Dr. Rey Pagtakhan Fund for Ethics, Humanity, and Politics, which invited distinguished community voices to reflect on how politics can either uphold or undermine hope. Panelists shared deeply personal stories—of statelessness and belonging, ancestral resilience against systemic racism, Indigenous teachings on reciprocity and care for creation, and the Jewish principle of tikkun olam, or repairing the world. Their insights reminded everyone that hope is not an abstract concept but a daily practice of bridge-building, courage, and solidarity. Aligning with a Shared Vision for Civic EngagementThe Mauro Institute’s leadership in convening conversations that blend history, faith, politics, and the arts speaks directly to NCDD’s commitment to fostering inclusive dialogue and collaborative action. By championing events that draw diverse communities together—whether through music, storytelling, or civic panels—the Institute models the kind of human-centered engagement that deepens understanding across differences.
At a time when polarization and disengagement threaten the foundations of democracy, gatherings like the Our Whole Society Conference offer a glimpse of what is possible when institutions, funders, and communities work together with intention and care. They remind us that hope is not passive—it is cultivated through relationships, made visible through action, and sustained by our willingness to show up for one another. NCDD celebrates the work of the Arthur V. Mauro Institute for Peace and Justice and its partners for creating opportunities that lift up shared humanity, foster civic courage, and advance our collective mission to strengthen democratic life. Their example is an invitation to us all: to keep listening, keep convening, and keep building hope in our communities—one dialogue at a time.
