Leading from Presence: The Center for Purposeful Leadership and the Art of Convening

The Center for Purposeful Leadership advances the Art of Convening®, a leadership and facilitation practice built on presence, deep listening, and intentional gathering as essential conditions for trust-building and collaborative action. Developed by Craig and Patricia Neal over several decades, the approach uses the Convening Wheel framework to help leaders across organizational, civic, and community contexts create spaces where every voice is heard and groups move toward shared purpose. The practice is directly applicable to anyone who facilitates dialogue, runs civic meetings, or leads community engagement processes, offering an inside-out developmental model that complements existing deliberative methods. At a moment when meetings feel rushed, conversations stay shallow, and genuine connection seems increasingly rare, the Center for Purposeful Leadership (CPL) is advancing a framework that invites leaders to gather people differently. Built around the Art of Convening® — a leadership practice developed over decades by founders Craig and Patricia Neal — CPL operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming how individuals, organizations, and communities come together. The Art of Convening is grounded in the conviction that how people gather shapes what becomes possible: when leaders show up with presence and intention, trust replaces tension, quiet voices find courage, and groups move from fragmented discussion toward aligned, meaningful action.

The practice centers on the Convening Wheel, a guiding framework that helps facilitators and leaders clarify shared intentions, build containers where every voice is heard, guide productive dialogue, and craft invitations that draw out authentic participation. CPL applies this framework across a wide range of contexts — organizational leadership, civic and community settings, faith communities, and educational environments — recognizing that the need for more intentional, trust-building gatherings cuts across every sector. The approach is explicitly inside-out: it asks leaders to cultivate their own presence and listening before trying to change the dynamics of a room. Programs include immersive learning pathways, community membership, coaching, and consulting, making the practice accessible to people at different stages of their leadership journey.

​The challenges CPL names — polarization, burnout, disconnection, surface-level leadership — are the same conditions that the dialogue and deliberation field exists to address. The Art of Convening offers NCDD members a complementary set of tools and frameworks, where many D&D methodologies focus on the design of conversation itself, CPL centers the interior development of the person doing the convening, arguing that better gatherings begin with better-prepared leaders. For practitioners who facilitate community dialogue, lead civic engagement processes, or support organizational decision-making, this inside-out approach fills a gap that agendas and processes alone cannot.
