The National Civic League extended the application deadline for the 2026 All-America City Award to March 5, 2026. The award process includes written applications and a three-day peer-learning event in Denver (June 26-28) where finalist communities present to a jury selecting ten winners who gain national recognition, economic benefits, and permanent All-America City designation. The National Civic League hosts open office hours on February 6, 13, and 20 to support applicants navigating competing priorities. This award advances NCDD’s mission by celebrating communities that demonstrate inclusive civic engagement, cross-sector collaboration, and innovative democratic practices to address polarization, rebuild trust, and create responsive local governance. The National Civic League has extended the application deadline for the 2026 All-America City Award to March 5, 2026, providing additional time for communities to refine applications and fully tell their civic stories amid competing priorities. This year's award theme—America at 250: Strengthening Civic Health and Building Trust—recognizes communities bringing founding democratic ideals to life by ensuring power to shape the future resides with the people, spotlighting creative approaches to engaging residents in collective efforts that create thriving, welcoming places where trust and belonging are abundant. As Americans across political perspectives express frustration with unresponsive systems, declining civic trust, and deepening polarization, the award honors communities reinventing how they come together to make decisions and solve problems through civic dialogue, collaboration, and community-building efforts that strengthen civic life, rebuild trust, address pressing challenges, and lay foundations for responsive, resilient democracy.
The National Civic League is supporting applicants through three informal open office hours on February 6, 13, and 20 at 1:00 PM ET, designed to answer questions about the application process with flexibility for participants to join briefly or stay for the full hour. Communities unable to attend these sessions can email Rebecca Trout to schedule one-on-one conversations, ensuring all applicants feel confident, prepared, and supported. Projects fitting this year's theme include collaborative efforts addressing education, economic development, housing, and public safety; participatory budgeting and citizens' assemblies; innovative public meeting formats; civic leadership development for youth and underrepresented groups; deliberative forums building consensus on contentious issues; civic technology platforms; trust-building initiatives through service projects and cultural exchanges; and public education campaigns increasing understanding of local decision-making processes. The award process unfolds in two stages: communities submit streamlined written applications outlining efforts related to the theme and describing their civic capital, then twenty finalist communities are selected for a three-day peer-learning event and competition in Denver, Colorado, June 26-28, 2026. During the event, finalist teams connect with peers, learn from national thought leaders, and present their work to a jury of nationally recognized civic leaders who select ten winning communities announced at the closing ceremony. Eligible communities include tribes, towns, cities, counties, and regions, with municipalities, school districts, community foundations, and community-based organizations all successfully leading applications in the past. Winners gain national recognition, join an elite network proudly maintaining All-America City designation permanently, experience economic benefits through easier attraction of businesses and grants, and feel reinvigorated with new sense of pride, accomplishment, and teamwork.
