NCDD Nov 2025 Webinar Recap - Talking Democracy (or Not): How Local Newsrooms Choose Their Words11/13/2025 On November 12th, NCDD co-hosted the webinar, Talking Democracy (or Not): How Local Newsrooms Choose Their Words, with Martin Carcasson, Director of Colorado State University’s Center for Public Deliberation and former NCDD Board Chair. Held just over a week after Election Day, this timely session brought together journalists and dialogue practitioners to explore how language shapes the public’s relationship with local news and civic life. The conversation examined new research from Press Forward’s Words That Work report and reflected on how communities are engaging with local news during a period of transition, reflection, and growing complexity in civic discourse. Panelists included Marika Lynch (Press Forward), Kimberly Spencer (Colorado Media Project / Press Forward Colorado), Linda Shapley (CoLab and CSU), and Eve Pearlman (Spaceship Media). Speakers shared diverse professional perspectives, highlighting shifts in audience language preferences, the evolving identity of journalism, and the need to center community information needs. Lynch offered an overview of the research, noting public fatigue with terms like “democracy” and “journalism” and identifying more resonant frames such as “local news and information.” Spencer reflected on shifting communication strategies with funders, noting that avoiding terms like news, journalism, and democracy — and instead framing the work as providing good civic information — helps open conversations rather than shut them down. Shapley emphasized the importance of balancing honest reporting with hopeful, solutions-oriented framing, while Pearlman underscored the power of relationships, connection, and plain language in fostering trust. Panelists emphasized that this work is not just about choosing better words, but about cultivating the relationships, presence, and shared understanding that sustain strong communities. The discussion illuminated how thoughtful language, authentic engagement, and a focus on community-centered information can strengthen public trust and support.
