Supporting Educators Through Ethical Challenges: Harvard EdEthics Launches Community of Practice11/12/2025 Harvard’s EdEthics initiative is launching a free virtual Community of Practice for the 2025–26 school year to support K–12 educators navigating increasingly complex and politically charged classroom environments. Through monthly facilitated sessions held from September 2025 to June 2026, the program offers a dedicated space for teachers to share experiences, explore ethical dilemmas, and strengthen their capacity to lead inclusive, thoughtful dialogue amid curriculum restrictions and shifting policy landscapes. In addition to providing direct support, the initiative includes a connected research effort that will document insights from participants—while maintaining strict confidentiality—to create professional development resources for educators nationwide. By amplifying teacher expertise and fostering collaborative learning, the Community of Practice advances democratic dialogue and equips educators to handle challenging conversations with integrity. K-12 educators across the United States face increasingly complex challenges as they navigate politically charged classroom environments, curriculum restrictions, and difficult conversations about difference. Recognizing the need for collective support and shared learning, Harvard's EdEthics initiative is launching a free virtual Community of Practice during the 2025-26 academic year—creating space for teachers to explore ethical dilemmas together while strengthening their capacity to foster inclusive, thoughtful dialogue in their classrooms. Creating Space for Mutual Support The EdEthics Community of Practice offers teachers a monthly gathering to think and learn together about their work amid shifting legislative and policy landscapes. From September 2025 through June 2026, participating educators will join facilitated sessions led by members of the EdEthics team and their partners, with flexible meeting times designed to accommodate busy teaching schedules. Two session options will be available each month—one on Tuesday or Wednesday from 6:30-8pm ET, and another from 8-9:30pm ET. This initiative responds directly to the lived experiences of educators working under curriculum restrictions, including divisive concepts legislation, local book or topic bans, and DEI prohibitions. Rather than leaving teachers to navigate these challenges in isolation, the Community of Practice creates a supportive network where educators can share strategies, explore resources, and develop approaches grounded in ethical practice and pedagogical excellence. Amplifying Educator Voices and Expertise The Community of Practice serves a dual purpose: providing immediate support to participating teachers while also distilling collective insights for broader impact. Through a connected research study, the EdEthics team will document the wisdom emerging from these conversations and create professional development resources for educators facing similar situations nationwide. This approach recognizes teachers as experts in their own right, with valuable knowledge to share about maintaining educational integrity and fostering genuine dialogue in contentious times.
All research components prioritize participant privacy and confidentiality. Educators who join the Community of Practice will be asked to sign a consent form agreeing to the collection of observation notes, survey responses, and occasional recordings or transcriptions of sessions, with all efforts made to keep such data unidentifiable.
