Reflecting on the Election: Continuing Our Commitment to Democracy

As we reflect on last month’s election, sustaining and strengthening democratic practices is more critical than ever. Through your dedication to practice, reflection, and connection, you play a vital role in fostering the dialogue and collaboration that uphold the values of democracy in our communities. Democracy is not limited to Election Day—it is an ongoing journey built through everyday actions that promote understanding, trust, and shared purpose.

Below are key updates for the Practitioner Mobilization for Democracy (PMD) initiative as we continue this essential work together.

December PMD Forum: Closing the Year Together
To continue our shared work and accommodate the holiday season, we’ve scheduled a special December PMD forum:

To keep our network informed and engaged, we offer two PMD listservs:

This survey offers an opportunity to reflect on how you're feeling about the current climate, where you find hope and motivation, and what would help you feel more connected as we work toward a more unified society. We are in the midst of our 2024 membership campaign, “Growing the Power of We: Dialogue as the Heartbeat of Democracy.” As a thriving network and incubator for collaboration, NCDD brings together people across sectors and communities to champion the essential role of dialogue and deliberation in strengthening democracy. We believe meaningful conversations, rooted in inclusivity and mutual respect, empower individuals and communities to create lasting change.

Key Campaign Goals:
This year’s campaign has ambitious goals to expand our reach, aiming to increase membership by 45% by the end of the quarter. Alongside membership growth, we are boosting engagement by increasing participation in NCDD’s events, forums, and webinars by 15%, offering more spaces for members to connect, share insights, and deepen their dialogue skills. Additionally, we are working to raise $50,000 to support vital initiatives such as expanding resources, enhancing our member directory, and advancing the Practitioner Mobilization for Democracy.

NCDD Member Announcements

Everyday Democracy is hosting a call on December 5th via Zoom to explore the future of American democracy and how to sustain it beyond election cycles. Doing Democracy: Building the World We Deserve, features frontline organizers working with Black, Latinx, youth, and white working-class communities, sharing insights on building a long-term, inclusive, multiracial democracy. Panelists will discuss lessons learned from the recent election cycle, strategies for engaging communities in democratic practice, and the pressing issues facing these communities today. The Sustained Dialogue Institute is hosting a three-part virtual training series in December 2024 to teach participants how to facilitate the Sustained Dialogue® process, a proven method for addressing divides and fostering collaborative solutions in communities. Workshops will cover topics like building trust through dialogue, active listening, equitable facilitation, and creating actionable plans to resolve conflicts. Sessions are held on Fridays (Dec. 6, 13, and 20) from 1–5 PM EST via Zoom, with materials provided in advance. Participants will gain practical skills to co-facilitate dialogue groups and join a supportive network of practitioners addressing complex issues in diverse settings. Registration is required, and space is limited to 46 participants. Register now!
Living Room Conversations is hosting "Post-Election: Moving Forward Together", a virtual event, on December 3 @ 11:00am - 12pm PST, 12:00pm - 1pm MST, 2pm-3pm EST, which invites participants to discuss election outcomes in a respectful, open setting. Using a guided format, this conversation focuses on bridging divides, processing election results, and finding common ground despite differing perspectives. The event encourages shared humanity and understanding as participants reflect on moving forward as a nation. Tickets are donation-based, read this blog post to learn more and register now.

Each call is an opportunity to engage with fellow members, share updates, and learn about projects shaping the future of our field in a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere.

Emerging Leaders Initiative: For people 35 years and under

We are currently working to establish a new monthly meeting time, if you are part of this group, please fill out this form so we can see when works best!

Media Collaborative: Join this working group to collaborate on strengthening the connection between D&D and journalism.

These calls will be monthly on the second Tuesday. The next call is Tuesday, December 10th at 12-1pm Eastern, 9-10am Pacific. The agenda doc with call information can be found linked here.

Higher Education Exchange: Community of practice tailored for faculty and staff in higher education engaged in dialogue and deliberation work.

Join the NCDD Network and participate in monthly member calls!

Being a member of the NCDD network is making a commitment to be in community together and to explore the next steps we can take to continue to broaden the reach of dialogue & deliberation practices. One of the ways we create community is by hosting monthly Member Calls on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 2pm Eastern/11am Pacific. These calls are meant to provide an opportunity for members to come together and share exciting announcements with one another, as well as give us as a community additional opportunities to connect, explore best practices, discuss challenges, and collaborate.

The NCDD Resource Center is a clearinghouse of top-notch resources that help people facilitate, teach, plan, evaluate and study dialogue and deliberation. We aim to present each resource in a useful, practical way (not too puff piece-y, jargony or generic), and link directly to the resource so people can get to what they need quickly.
