Conversation Cafe at the Seattle Center
Join us (and if you’re local, invite your friends!) the evening before the conference for an open-to-the-public Conversation Cafe organized by NCDD member Susan Partnow. Co-hosted by NCDD and Seattle’s Compassion Games, the event will take place at Seattle Center House (home of the Space Needle) as part of Seattle’s “Next Fifty” Celebration. We encourage all conference attendees to participate.
Deliberation Bootcamp
This presentation serves as an introduction to the world of dialogue and deliberation (“D&D”), primarily developed for newcomers to the NCDD conference. After considering the limitations of current dominant forms of community talk, presenter Martin Carcasson will make the case for increased capacity for both dialogue and deliberation work locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Martin will highlight D&D work from multiple perspectives, cutting across academic, government, and civic sectors, and summarize the “15 Key Aspects of the Deliberative Democracy Movement” detailed in his and Leah Sprain’s 2009 article. Martin is Director of Colorado State University’s Center for Public Deliberation.
Community Engagement Online for All
Participate in a 2-hour pre-conference workshop led by Steven Clift, Executive Director of E-Democracy.org. One of our conference Co-Sponsors, E-Democracy.org is a pioneer in fostering inclusive online engagement. This dynamic two-part conversation on building inclusive online community engagement in neighborhoods will involve a mix of local and national participants excited to learn from each other.
“Method Mapping” Workshop with the Group Works card deck
Join others for a playful exploration into the strengths and distinctions of different group participation methodologies using the newly published Group Works card deck of 91 underlying patterns. This working session is open to anyone familiar with one or more participatory methodologies, and who has at least a passing familiarity with the Group Works cards (can be achieved by checking out the above link). 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. at Antioch University Seattle, a ten minute walk from the conference hotel.
Workshop on Community Weaving: Action planning session to better outcomes
Community Weaving (CW) is a social architecture that syncs existing programs and initiatives to create an interdependent functioning whole community system. All attendees of this morning workshop will be networked together and introduced to Community Weaving tools, techniques and new cutting-edge technology that is free to use. All participants will design a customized strategy to integrate Community Weaving into current efforts to improve efficacy and outcomes of their programs and initiatives.
