200 hours/ $2,000 honorarium Timeframe: Start in mid-May 2024 Apply by April 30, 2024 The National Civic League offers a fellowship opportunity for a Harvard University undergraduate or graduate student to work with the League’s Center for Democracy Innovation. Founded in 1894, the National Civic League continues to maintain its focus on good governance at the local municipal level. The Civic League championed many of the democracy innovations of the early 20th Century; today the League maintains the Model City Charter, organizes the All-America City Award, publishes the National Civic Review, and supports an extensive national network of local elected, appointed, and civic leaders. The League’s Center for Democracy Innovation works with elected officials and other leaders to understand, test, and disseminate the next generation of civic innovations, which have the potential to make democracy more participatory, equitable, and productive. The Center has created the Healthy Democracy Ecosystem Map, developed the Democracy Innovations for Better Public Meetings project, and organized the Global Innovations in Democracy Parliamentary Exchange. This position would focus primarily on the work we are doing to help communities explore approaches to better, healthier, and more meaningful civic engagement – as constituents, stakeholders, taxpayers, disenfranchised, renters, students, etc. – to improve public decision-making and problem-solving. Examples of work that a team member might perform are researching and analyzing engagement efforts by city councils, school boards, or commissions; social media and other community networks; gathering and tagging records for the Healthy Democracy Ecosystem Map; researching innovations in the use of technology for better public engagement. This is primarily a remote opportunity, working with a team via online platforms. There may be opportunities to convene in person for on-site project work. Applicants would be expected to devote 5-10 hours per week. Please forward your resume and a cover letter expressing your interest to Benita Duran, Senior Director at the National Civic League’s Center for Democracy [email protected] by April 30, 2024.
