NCDD Member Organization, the Public Square Academy is offering a FREE workshop series, The Democracy Challenge (TDC). This four-week orientation course introducing the Public Square Academy is aimed at educating and empowering citizens to combat oppression and promote civic engagement. Through weekly Zoom meetings, participants explore nine pillars addressing issues such as disenfranchisement, economic empowerment, and public health, with the goal of developing projects to enact positive change in their communities. Public Square Academy - The Democracy Challenge

The Democracy Challenge (TDC) is our orientation course, serving as an introduction to the Public Square Academy.

We believe that healthy, economically empowered citizens make the best civic outcomes.  This means educating, empowering and engaging all citizens.  There are - and have been - ongoing efforts to keep citizens oppressed. In the democracy challenge, we help you to reverse engineer oppression by helping you get educated, empowered, and engaged.

If you want to oppress people, you 1) disenfranchise them from the political process by gerrymandering voting districts, undermining confidence in journalists, and voter intimidation. Then, 2) You make it harder for them to succeed, you destroy the consumer side of the capitalism compact, and you create a system of shareholder socialism. Finally, 3) you find ways to degrade their health and wellbeing, limit their education, and move towards loyalty- and fear-based, rather than merit-based, culture and leadership.

In this workshop, you will explore nine areas (we call them pillars) where you can stand up and become a better citizen. This is a four week workshop, meeting for an hour per week on zoom. Each week we focus on three of these pillars: their foundations, the underlying values, current issues, and opportunities for improvement. We will develop and lead discussions, and help you develop you project to address areas you are moved to act.
